Charting the Future of Nursing: Pioneering the Advanced Nurse Leader Certification (ANLC)
By Pattie Bondurant, DNP, RN, ANLC
Chief Transformation & Quality Officer, Transform Healthcare Consulting LLC
Reflecting on my journey leading the development of the Advanced Nurse Leader Certification (ANLC), I’m struck by the essential role nurse leaders play across every facet of healthcare—whether in hospitals, community agencies, or among industry partners. We are not merely participants in the healthcare landscape; we are its heart, mind, and spirit. Our leadership influences the culture of care, drives innovation, and keeps patient safety and quality at the forefront of our mission.

The COVID-19 pandemic profoundly impacted our field and revealed significant vulnerabilities, leading to a loss of professional identity for many nurse leaders. This experience underscored the need to reclaim and redefine our roles. As I envisioned the ANLC, it became clear that there was an urgent need to acknowledge and clearly define the critical contributions of nurse leaders. This certification is designed not just to recognize the unique skills and experiences of nurse leaders but also to reaffirm our essential role in healthcare. It stands as a testament to our expertise and a commitment to raising the standards of nursing leadership.
The ANLC offers a tailored curriculum that empowers nurse leaders to embrace their professional identity with pride and confidence. This certification ensures that our voices are heard, our contributions are visible, and our roles are well-defined. Our goal is to create a future where nursing leadership is synonymous with excellence in patient care, innovation, and advocacy. The ANLC is more than just a certification; it represents a movement to honor and redefine the future of nursing leadership and inspire the next generation of nurse leaders.

Unique Opportunities Offered by the ANLC:
- Innovative Learning Design: The ANLC redefines traditional approaches to solo learning and electronic test-taking. Instead, it promotes a community-based learning environment where participation, growth, and achievement are fostered and celebrated.
- Customized Learning Journeys: Learners complete pre- and post-tests to measure their learning and growth, allowing for a personalized learning experience.
- Expert Faculty Guidance: Nationally recognized experts guide participants through the 9-month certification journey, providing essential support and insight.
- Comprehensive Curriculum: The program’s six evidence-based pillars are taught through a blend of pre-course work, live sessions, homework, written reflections, and expert mentoring. This approach allows for the customization of learning and application of the content.
- Equity and Accountability Focus: Our conceptual framework emphasizes equity and accountability in the care systems we design and deliver.
- Innovative Systems Thinking: The program encourages creative thinking and design through thoughtfully chosen assignments and mentoring tailored to each pillar.
- Capstone Project: Learners synthesize their learning into a final project, which is presented to the ANLC Advisory Board, showcasing their comprehensive understanding and application of the certification content.
I’m honored to continue my work with the certification as the faculty member leading the Quality and Safety Pillar and mentoring the next generation of advanced nursing leaders. I’m excited about the opportunity to see some of my esteemed colleagues in our upcoming September 2024 and March 2025 cohorts.
