Reducing NICU Readmissions and Nurse Workload: The ROI of NICU2Home
By: Sarah Brannan, Vice President, Care Delivery
With the World Health Organization projecting a global shortage of 4.5 million nurses by 2030, hospitals are now preparing to deliver high-acuity care with fewer staff. This includes exploring opportunities to automate administrative tasks for nurses, thereby optimizing the time spent at the bedside delivering care. Neonatal intensive care units (NICUs), in particular, face some of the steepest challenges: caring for medically fragile infants while also equipping clinical teams and families with the necessary resources and education throughout the NICU stay, ultimately leading to a safe and timely discharge.
In many cases, patient discharge education typically occurs within a compressed window of 48 to 72 hours before the baby is discharged home. The result is fragmented communication, re-explanations, and families leaving ill-equipped to take care of their infant at home. It’s an emotional burden for parents and a strain on staff time, with financial consequences for hospitals.
Up to 80% of discharge instructions are forgotten or misunderstood by parents. Nearly 63% of NICU babies experience at least one home care error, and between 15% and 37% are readmitted in the first year. These are not mild or inexpensive returns to inpatient care. A single readmission can cost upwards of $70,000.
A Platform Built on a Decade of NICU Research
Built from over ten years of research conducted at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and Rush Medical College, NICU2Home was created to reduce these adverse outcomes, while automating time-intensive administrative tasks for the clinical team. The cloud-based platform integrates with a hospital’s EHR and shares timely, structured updates directly with families, reducing repetitive administrative responsibilities for nurses while providing families with the information they need to feel confident when it matters most.
Dr. Craig Garfield, a professor of pediatrics, NICU hospitalist, AngelEye Clinical Advisor, and co-founder of NICU2Home, put it simply: “When families leave the NICU uncertain or underprepared, they’re far more likely to face care complications. NICU2Home helps change that by giving parents the knowledge and confidence they need to address their child’s unique care needs without adding to staff workload.”
Breaking Down the ROI
AngelEye has worked with a third-party consulting firm to create a NICU-specific ROI calculator to help leaders quantify impact. It uses unit-level specifics — daily census, length of stay, staffing ratios, readmission rates, and payor mix — to estimate savings tied to time, materials, and avoidable utilization.
For example, applying the calculator to a 35-bed NICU with an average daily census (ADC) of 34 and an average length of stay (ALOS) of 20 days projects the following savings:
- $157,200 in nurse time saved (time available for clinical activities)
- $52,500 in material printing and translation cost reductions
- $140,000 in reduced length of stay
- $310,020 in value from virtual bed capacity (shorter stays creating new patient openings)
Together, these direct gains total $659,720 per year for a unit of that size. Of course, every hospital’s numbers will differ, which is why the calculator allows teams to model their own unit-level operational data points and targets.
Parents Feel It, Too
Standardizing care not only improves outcomes and reduces hospital costs, but also addresses the emotional challenges NICU families face after discharge. While many families typically experience a decline in confidence and competence during the post-discharge period, those using NICU2Home reported a measurable increase in confidence and competence at every level of engagement.
Multi-site survey results demonstrate NICU2Home’s impact:
- 77% of families felt more confident in caring for their babies
- 79% reported lower anxiety
- 90% better understood their baby’s progress
- 70% made fewer calls to the NICU
- 76% spent less time searching the internet for information
A Smarter Discharge Model with Lasting Returns
As the nursing shortage intensifies and NICUs are asked to do more with less, solutions that simultaneously reduce staff burden and improve patient outcomes are no longer optional—they’re essential. NICU2Home represents a smarter discharge model; one that transforms the hospital stay into a structured, supportive journey for families while freeing nurses to focus on direct clinical care. The financial impact is clear, but the deeper value lies in fewer readmissions, more confident parents, and healthier starts for fragile infants.
